754 AREA CODE IS TOO SIMILAR TO 954

I did not have a problem with Broward being assigned the 954 area code. I do not have a problem with 10-digit dialing. However, I do foresee a problem and tremendous confusion with the chosen overlay area code, 754.

Previously, when an overlay area code was assigned, it was significantly different than the existing area code. For example, Miami-Dade County was assigned the overlay area code 786 (“SUN”), significantly different from 305.

However, the assignment of 754 as the overlay area code in Broward, where the existing area code is 954, may lead to confusion as well as objection by some businesses. Although this may not be a problem for businesses that include their area code on business cards and letterhead, many phone numbers are communicated orally. And since there is only one digit that is different between the two area codes, someone who is provided with a phone number with the 754 area code but familiar with Broward’s existing area code, 954, might think that an error was made and attempt to dial the phone number using the 954 area code. This will probably hold true, too, with senior citizens who probably had a hard enough time adjusting to the 954 area code.

I would like to suggest that the Public Service Commission reconsider its choice of 754 as the overlay area code for Broward County and choose a different area code that might not cause as much confusion.
