Roberto Castillo, training for the Southeastern Masters Track and Field Championships next month in Orlando, won his fourth consecutive road race Saturday at the Run For Youth 5K at Sunset Park.
Castillo, 40, of Miami, one of the state’s top Masters runners, covered the 3.1-mile circular course in 15 minutes, 48 seconds. Mike Castillo, 29, of Pembroke Pines, was second in 16:18.
The younger Castillo, no relation to the winner, recently moved to South Florida.
Roberto Castillo has been the winningest road racer in South Florida this season. He has either won or finished in the top three in every race he has competed in. His most impressive finish against a good Masters field was third place at the Jacksonville River Run.
“I am training more for the track,” Castillo said. “I am getting in shape. … I would like to break the Masters record in the 1,500-meters and the mile.”
His best time in the 1,500 is 3:55 and 4:10 in the mile. He bypassed Saturday’s Miami Gatorade Meet to compete in the road race. Castillo, coached by Alberto Echeverria, will next run the 7-Mile Bridge Run on April 12.
Mary Level-Menton, 34, of Coral Springs, won the women’s race in 16:54, nearly 2 minutes ahead of Kimberly Halliday, 40, of Deerfield Beach (18:36). Racewalker Linda Stein, 49, of Sunrise decided to run instead and won the 45-49 age group in 21:19. Daniel Koch, 53, of Coconut Creek (31:43) and Elizabeth Nelson, 47, of Plantation (30:04) won the men’s and women’s racewalk titles.
