A man was killed in a hit-and-run while changing a tire along Interstate 595 in Davie Thursday night, officials say, the second crash that day along the same stretch of highway.
Earlier that afternoon, about 3 p.m., a tanker truck carrying cooking oil overturned in the westbound lanes of I-595 at Nob Hill Road, catching on fire, according to Lt. Indiana Miranda, a spokesperson for Florida Highway Patrol.
The driver had lost control due to a “tire failure,” Miranda said, and was hospitalized with significant burns at the Ryder Trauma Center in Miami.
The westbound lanes of I-595 between Pine Island and Nob Hill were shut down for hours as FHP investigated into Thursday evening.
Later that night, a little after 10:30 p.m., a man was killed in a hit-and-run just east of the Pine Island exit, the driver fleeing along the same stretch of road. There is no connection between the two incidents, Miranda said. She did not say when the road had reopened.
A black four-door sedan, possibly a BMW, had been traveling west on I-595 in the exit-only lane for Nob Hill Road, approaching the Pine Island overpass, Miranda said. The victim, a 52-year-old man from Davie, was in the shoulder a fifth of a mile east of the exit, changing the rear-left tire on his Toyota Prius.
The car veered into the shoulder, its front right side hitting the man and throwing him further west, Miranda said. The car then fled the scene, heading west and exiting at Nob Hill Road.
Davie Fire Rescue responded, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The suspect’s car should have damage to its front right headlight and bumper, Miranda said.
FHP is investigating.
