Dr. D. answers

The following are the answers to the Try Some More section of last week’s Dr. Discovery science-at-home column:

Q. Try the same experiment and use another liquid. What happens?

A. The same results. Molecules move faster when heated and slow down when cooled.

Q. Who invented the first alcohol thermometer?

A. German physicist Gabriel Daniel Fahrenheit.

Q. What are the two liquids commonly found in today’s thermometers?

A. Dye-colored alcohol (red) and mercury (silver). Mercury thermometers contain mercury, a poisonous substance, and should be handled with caution. For safety reasons, mercury thermometers should be turned in to health-care officials and never used.
