F.W. FRANZ, 99; LED JEHOVAH’S WITNESS SOCIETY

Frederick William Franz, a Bible scholar and member of the governing body of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, died Tuesday of a heart attack in New York City. He was 99.

In 1945, Mr. Franz became the vice president of the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania. He remained in that office until 1977, when he became the society’s fourth president.

Although he lost his sight in his mid-90s, he continued to serve at the society’s world headquarters in New York City’s borough of Brooklyn.
