FORT LAUDERDALE — Taking Bayview Drive?
You can expect to face detours over the next four weeks.
Crews are still working on repairing a sewer pipe that collapsed Friday and caused a sinkhole to form along Bayview Drive north of Commercial Boulevard.
The sinkhole was about 20 feet long and 10 feet wide, forcing the closure of Bayview Drive.
A portion of Bayview Drive will remain closed to traffic for at least a month while repairs are made, city spokeswoman Arlene Borenstein said Tuesday.
Fort Lauderdale has hired a contractor to evaluate the condition of the sanitary sewer system in the area and complete any necessary repairs, Borenstein said.
Initially, city officials hoped the road could be reopened in just a few days.
But after crews got a better look, they found more extensive damage than originally anticipated.
A bypass system has been set up to direct the sewage flow toward the city’s wastewater treatment plant to keep toilets working for the surrounding neighborhood.
