St. Thomas Aquinas staked its claim as the best volleyball team in the state by winning the Tampa Bay Invitational Saturday. St. Thomas Aquinas, seeded fifth in the tournament, didn’t lose a match during the two-day event. Cardinal Gibbons took third place.
St. Thomas coach Lisa Zielinski was all smiles following the Raiders 15-9, 15-3 championship win over Episcopal School of Acadiana (Layfayette, La.) Aquinas was led by outside hitter Trina Maso de Mayo. Setter Vanessa Illanes, who along with de Moya was named to the all-tournament team, made the offense click with 21 assists in the final two games. Cardinal Gibbons finished the tournament in third.
The Redskins defeated Olympic Heights 15-7, 15-11.

ORLANDO
The Douglas and Coral Springs girls’ cross country teams finished in the top five in the Walt Disney World Cross Country Classic. The St. Thomas girls finished fourth in the Class 5A race. The top Broward individual finisher was Coral Springs’ Julie Ayers, who came in sixth in 20 minutes, 47.9 seconds.
