With too few troopers here, why ship them off to Texas? | Letters to the editor

I would like to request that Gov. Ron DeSantis actually think about Floridians instead of politics in his decision-making. We all know that he wants to run for president, but making silly gestures in that vein do not help his constituents.

My son’s car recently broke down on Florida’s Turnpike during evening rush hour. No problem, I thought, because I have AAA towing. But AAA let me down by making my son wait for three hours on the side of the road. Even worse, I told my son to call 911 and request assistance because of the risk of sitting on the side of the road at dusk while cars whiz past at 75 mph. He was told there was nothing they could do because a tow was already dispatched, so no Florida Highway Patrol officer was available to alert oncoming traffic to my son’s stranded car.

If there are no FHP officers available during rush hour on the Turnpike, what business do we have sending anybody to Texas? Governor, get your own house in order before you assist anybody else on a non-issue like immigration, where I personally haven’t seen any issues in the state of Florida.

I feel like DeSantis is failing us as Floridians in pursuit of some personal political objective. As a Floridian, I don’t feel safe in many respects because of this governor.

Don’t blame DeSantis; blame Democrats

I wanted to respond to both recent letters submitted, by Gary Kaufman and Charles Miller. First of all, I would bet you both are Democrats, and you’re just taking advantage to bash our great Gov. DeSantis, who’s making Democrats fume lately. Wait till 2024. You’ll really be fuming.

Sending police to assist at the border crisis is meant to do just that — assist. When you consider that President Biden and his trusted companion, the vice president, don’t care one bit about what’s happening at the border, Republicans are trying to help.

As far as the need for more police on patrol on the highways, you can blame that on Democrats too. Police are scared to do their jobs. They’re not scared of being killed, but of being charged with killing a criminal, a man with a gun who refuses to drop it, scared of being sent to prison for doing their jobs and never coming home to their families at the end of a shift.

I don’t blame cops at all for not wanting to pull over drivers nowadays, because we all know what could happen. Then the joke is, the courts find them not guilty and let them right back on the streets. Thank God we have great sheriffs and chiefs of police who support their officers when they are right in doing their jobs, but too many across the country side with criminals and go against their own officers.

So don’t blame DeSantis. Blame Democrats. They are the reason our country is going to hell and getting destroyed. Our children are being brainwashed by some teachers in some states and crime statistics going up like crazy. I close with a question for all who voted for Biden. I hope you are happy with what is going on at the border, high gas prices, trillions being spend on Democratic wishes and deficits.

Selective outrage

It is interesting to see that many of the politicians that outlawed the teaching of critical race theory because it is not based on objective data and relies on anecdotal evidence are the same politicians who want to mandate the teaching of creationism in the schools. Selective outrage is always proof of political motivation..

Legislature strikes again

Re: Florida’s new Parents’ Bill of Rights brings big changes to medical care for children, July 7

Another perfectly crafted bill from the Republicans in the Florida legislature: House Bill 241.

Not only does it pander to ignorance and misinformation, it promotes it. Not only does it put children at greater risk of of diseases that have been on the wane for decades due to medical advances, it puts them at greater risk of sexually transmitted diseases and unplanned pregnancies. As an added bonus, medical professionals may now be at legal risk for assisting in an emergency.

Those are the people who have a clue how to reduce the chances of lasting injury or possible death. All in the name of rugged individualism, and because Republicans are afraid of anything other than simple answers and government overreach. That government “overreach” allowed us to reduce or eliminate the horrible consequences of deadly diseases such as polio, small pox, typhus and HIV/AIDS.
