When the Pompano Chiefs 80-pound squad arrived in Miramar for a much anticipated matchup of unbeaten football teams, emotions were running high and some trash-talking could be heard around the field.
But the Wolverines got the final word and moved to 6-0 with a convincing 20-0 win Saturday in the South Florida Youth Football League.
Miramar won behind the running of Xavier Love (71 rushing yards, one touchdown) and De’Andre Williams (56 rushing yards).
“What we do is play football, and today, we came out and did what we had to,” Miramar coach Dana Alvin said.
Besides a 15-yard scoring run in the first quarter by Rohance Robinson, it was all Love and Williams, who have learned to share the running in this potent backfield.
Playing together for the first time, the pair have given Coach Alvin and his team something to be proud of.
“This isn’t about us doing something individually,” said Williams, a fifth-grader at Miramar Elementary School. “This is a team and we win and lose together as a team.”
Love, who attends Seacrest Elementary School, is just happy to be a part of a team that has been impressive through the first six weeks of the season.
Williams scored one touchdown and added 71 yards to a total that went over 100 on the day.
“We knew that this was a good team that we were playing out there,” Williams said. “We just went out and played our best.”
After leading 6-0 at the half, Love scored on a 25-yard run with 2:24 left in the third quarter. Brandon Morris made the two-point kick and it was 14-0.
After forcing a turnover, the Wolverines ended the scoring with 45 seconds remaining in the contest on a 1-yard run by Javari Alvin.
As Pompano coach Kip Phillips and his team left the field after the game, they offered no excuses. They were beaten by a good team.
“We’ll see them again in the playoffs,” Phillips said. “They played well, have great athletes, but this was a tough week of practice for us and we sat several players who didn’t show up during the week. We’ll be back. You can count on that.”
Ronnie Williams led the way on defense for the Chiefs with 10 tackles.
